In today’s world eco living has become a popular concept. Driven by high oil prices and a population which is stressing all natural resources, it is a natural step for man to begin to minimize his effect upon the world. However, eco living is at its very root, a personal choice. Here at Zimbali Retreats we have embraced the concept of eco living 100%, deriving essentially all of our needs from nature. Being located in the tropics allows us to benefit from Mother Nature year round.

For over 5 years we have been living 100% from solar electricity. Utilizing 24 GE solar panels, 24 Rolls solar batteries and the quality of an Outback inverter, this system was designed to “get through the cloudy times” of a tropical rainy season.

Solar hot water is perhaps the most widely used green energy technology.  Although considered a convenience in a tropical climate, there is nothing sweeter then feeling the sun warm your shoulders, on a cool December night.

This is by far the most important aspect of living off-grid. Man cannot live more than a few days without this precious gift. We employ seamless aluminum guttering to catch the rain from roof surfaces and PVC pipes to deliver it to over 7000 gallons worth of storage.  Rain water is naturally soft and your skin retains its natural moisture and softness when you bathe in it. We employ the latest in carbon nanotechnology filtration at the sink to provide pure living drinking water.

Located in a tropical mountain valley, complete with river and spring, this farm is the greatest of all Mother Nature’s gifts. And it is this gift that allows Zimbali Retreats to achieve almost 100% off grid status. In this paradise we have planted over 500 fruit trees of all varieties and over 700 pieces of fruit from pineapple to banana and plantain. This farm is 100% organic, and only organic fertilizers and compost are used; this leaves us cutting a lot of grass and pulling a lot of weeds by hand; we perform this work in thanks, as a labor of love. As vegetarians, we derive as much as 75% of our food and spices from “our back yard”. We believe that in the future, people are going to want to know more where their food comes from.
We welcome you to come and experience this dedication to a most natural lifestyle. There are very few places on earth where this opportunity even exists. Whether up in the mountains or down by the sea, come and live by the rhythm of nature and discover the peace within.

Zimbali Retreats is a concept born by the love of a couple who joined in their belief of a simpler, more natural life; a life at one with Mother Nature. Their backgrounds could not be more diverse:

Alecia is a Rastafarian from birth. Born of a Rasta father, she grew with her extended family in these very hills. Here, grandma taught her the ways of life that have always been. Making juices from fruit, oil from coconuts and learning the value of all that surrounds you. She followed her grandpa into the hills of their farm and learned firsthand the art of how to plant and how to grow. She is the next generation; a keeper of the wisdom and consciousness that has been handed down through the ages.

Mark was the son of naval pilot and grew up a child of the world. His exposure to life in Africa at a young age was an experience that would mold his life and leave a lifelong question in his mind; what was life like when people lived in harmony with nature? Mark’s success at Chicago Mercantile Exchange allowed him to begin the quest to answer his lifelong question.

Upon meeting Lisa, they joined together to raise a family, and build a life at one with nature. Zimbali Retreats is the end result of years of dedication and love. Come and experience the peace and tranquility that only being close to nature can bring. Immersed in the silence of the mountains or lulled by the sound of the sea; sleep like you’ve never slept, feel like you’ve never felt as your mind slows and you begin to hear. Allow our family to take you back in time and share with you a way of life that has always existed; Harmony with nature.

Our futures Hope, rests in EACH child’s Heart…

It takes a whole village to raise a child”

Zimbali Retreats is a gateway into a beautiful and ancient way of life. E.A.C.H seeks to provide an avenue by which caring people of all cultures can open their hearts and share with each other the blessing of giving hope to all children and our collective future.

In rural village life, finding the extra money needed to provide a child with a consistent education is not easy. Even in loving communities, children are left behind as everyone is fighting the same battle and there is little left to give. The impact on the child is a story of inconsistency, lack of confidence and falling behind, until eventually there is just no way to catch up.

E.A.C.H is constantly striving to provide the little things in children’s lives that can mean so much; Whether taxi fare and lunch money or books and correct shoes and uniforms for school, these “little things” can be the difference between attending school or not. Even small presents on Christmas and a little surprise on your birthday are treats that give the children the feeling that their community is a caring place.

A small donation can go a very long way; please ask about these programs and how you can help J Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and you can specify how you would like your donation applied. Better yet, come and meet the people and the children. Spend time with them and share with them yourselves.

Suggested Donation Items: Books & book bags, Clothes, Shoes, Pencils & pens, Notebooks, Art materials, Money & Computers (new or used)

E.A.C.H also has larger programs in the works:

  • Providing better sanitary bathroom conditions at a local school where they are desperately needed.
  • Providing aluminum guttering and rain barrels for rain water harvesting; a more consistent, healthy and money saving supply of water for schools and families in the area.
  • Building a small football field in the community to provide the community and the children a place to play and hang out.
  • Building a bathroom and lunch area for our “Canaan History Tour” which will provide 15 jobs in the area and also be a wholesale location for farm goods to move from local farmers to the farmers market; thereby increasing farming opportunity to a large area of surrounding communities.
  • Providing material for the “Bun- Bun Book Club”- an expat run reading club which helps adults in the area learn to reading after work in an informal, homey atmosphere.

I promise it will be an experience you will never forget.

With gratitude and Blessed Love to all,

Empress Alecia
